Medicare Law Contains New Reporting Requirements - As part of newly enacted legislation to address Medicare physician reimbursements and SCHIP funding (the "Medicare, Medicaid, and SCHIP Extension Act of 2007"), Congress has approved new reporting requirements for insurers, including medical liability insurers. Adamo, Esq., CPCU, president of ProAssurance Corporation as treasurer; and Theodore J. Clarke, MD, chairman and chief executive officer of COPIC Insurance Company as secretary.
These innovative enterprises, dubbed "bedpan mutuals" by their commercial competitors, melded the skills and knowledge of physicians and insurance professionals into a new approach to addressing medical malpractice problems. Today, the nation’s physician and dentist-owned medical malpractice insurance companies dominate this market, providing protection to more than 60% of all physicians in private practice in the United States.

The PIAA is a national association of physician and other healthcare provider-owned and/or -operated medical liability insurance companies, which insure more than 60 percent of Americaprivate practicing physicians as well as dentists, hospitals, and other healthcare practitioners.
Our most recent activities have focused on active involvement with the NAIC Task Forces, which have been formed in response to the 2005 GAO Report on risk retention groups. As meets are scheduled, we send out broadcast emails to anyone that would like to receive them. Reports of activities of these meetings are also distributed to members and then stored in our online resource archives. duane castles - Chairman => The release of the new logo denotes the initial phase of a comprehensive branding campaign—a complete new visual identity—for the PIAA. A long-term plan will guide the gradual transition of the identity into all of the Association’s print and electronic communications, including a complete redesign of its website—expected to be available to the public sometime this year.
He was also a member of the advisory committee for the Arizona Department of Health, a member of the board of the Arizona Foundation for Medical Care, andmember of the liaison committee between the Maricopa County Bar Association and ArizonaMedical Association. DUANE CASTLES completed a three-year term on the PIAA Board ofDirectors as vice chair.

Risk Management & Research - Since 1985, the PIAA has maintained the PIAA Data Sharing Project, which is now the world’s largest medical malpractice research database. Storing detailed data on over 225,000 medical and dental claims and suits, the database provides a rich resource for the investigation of the underlying causes and issues pertaining to malpractice claims. Standard reports produced from the database and specially-designed analyses are provided to PIAA members to augment their own risk management efforts. Special research studies are also conducted when specific areas of concern are identified. The PIAA also works with other associations and medical specialty groups in joint research projects aimed at improving the delivery of healthcare and reducing practitioner liability.
